Why You Need Research And Development

When I was a boy about 40 years ago, I remember my mum constantly hanging out the washing—either on a long line or one of those compact fold-away ones. And whenever it started raining (which, in the UK, was often), she’d dash out into the garden to grab it all before it got soaked again.

Then, as soon as there was a break in the weather, out the washing would go once more.So I thought, why not make her a cover she could quickly pull over the washing when it started raining?

I went to B&Q with my dad, and we bought a long sheet of polythene—about 6 meters by 3 meters. I draped it over the washing line and taped the edges together with duct tape. I remember my mum being initially pleased with it, but it didn’t take long before it tore.

Undeterred, my patient dad took me back to B&Q, and we bought some thicker plastic sheeting. My mum used this for a few weeks, but then pointed out that it really needed a cover, as standing water was accumulating in the folds, which would then drip onto the dry washing. Also, after a while, it got pretty grimy, and the material became more brittle due to weathering and UV exposure.

This experience taught me the importance of testing (ideally, I should have cycle-tested it to failure, but that would come later), iterating on a design, re-testing, and inevitably modifying it.

So the old adage by Thomas Edison—“1% Inspiration, 99% Perspiration”—is probably the biggest message I want to convey. It’s extremely unlikely you’ll have an idea, make it, and voilà—success.

No, it’s a long, LONG and often laborious process.

Research & Development

My dad was a research scientist ( DSc and Fellow of the Royal Society). I remember his work even featuring on the BBC Nine O’Clock News back in the 1970s. We were incredibly proud of him, and he strongly encouraged my interest in engineering and invention.

His job, at its core, was to find answers to difficult problems. Research scientists don’t just have ideas — they design and carry out structured programmes of experiments often lasting years, testing and retesting, analysing results, and refining their approach again and again.

That’s why invention is never just about the initial idea. Every idea is followed by a long period of research, testing, redesigning, and more testing. In many cases, hundreds — if not thousands — of prototypes are built and evaluated before something truly works.

I know I’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating: if you want to invent something, you must be prepared for — and allow time for — this R&D period.

It’s not optional; it’s fundamental.
Many successful companies recognise this and invest heavily in Research & Development departments.

These teams are specifically tasked with generating new ideas and developing them to a feasibility stage, before they are handed over to Product Development teams to be engineered for manufacture.

Fools Rush In

It’s best not to be too impulsive ( although I think spontaneity is generally a good thing) — something I’ve had to learn the hard way.

Often it’s better to let ideas percolate a little before diving straight in.

When I was arond 5 or 6, one year we actually had a long dry hot summer in England, and there was a hosepipe ban because they called a drought.

After having a bath, I reasoned that rather than waste all that water after a bath, I thought I’d vacuum it up and save it.

Fortunately my Mum noticed me taking in the cleaner and stopped my cunning plan just as I was about to turn the vacuum cleaner into an impromptu water pump!

I had been warned about not mixing electricity and water but in my eagerness I forgot this!

Fail Fast, Fail Often

My next big crisis in life was that i kept loosing my 12-inch ruler in the depths my school satchel.

Every time the teacher asked for measurements, I’d be elbow-deep in there like I was searching for lost treasure.

Solution?  A folding ruler I could put in my pencil case.

So I cut the ruler in half with my dad’s hacksaw and glued a hinge on it with super glue.

It took me a few attempts to get it right as it wouldnt fold flat at first and I had to sand the  cut ends back a little to allow for the hinge size.I even had a basla wood jig to accuartely align it before gluening on the hinge.

But it showed me that its best to prototype and iterate - Fail Fast and all that.

But it worked — I had a homemade folding ruler that fit in my pencil case.

I know folding rulers exist but I enjoyed making my own.

Prototype, Test, Prototype, Test...

Lego, in particular, could keep me entertained and absorbed for hours.

I still use Lego today to quickly prototype ideas as you can pretty much build anything with it especilaly with the technical parts. It's my go to quick prototype kit.

It also teaches you get in the habit of using standard parts where you can.

I’m not trying to sound pretentious, but I think this is what people call a flow state.

Iv'e experienced something similar wehn you intensly concentrating such as rock climbing or even when I meditate.

I also get it too when I’m deep into designing something in CAD or making a quick prototype.

It feels almost as if the design is creating itself somehow.

The Risk of Always Falling in Love With Your Own Ideas

We all fall for it, especilaly if you have had a run of good ideas. You start to think you are the  second coming and become over confident.

You come up with an idea but because it’s yours, you think it’s perfect.

The fact is, most ideas are duds.

You see it all the time on shows like Shark Tank or Dragons’ Den—people pouring thousands into dead-end ideas.

When I was a boy (I dont know how I survived my childhood...)  you could spend your 20 pence pocket money on fireworks at the sweet shop !!!???  So I tried building a two-stage rocket which was supposed to launch straight up, drop the booster, and soar out of site, into orbit

But It shot up a few metres up, started tumbling , and exploded in a burst of sparks right over our heads.

The way to spot winners? Test your ideas honestly. Ask yourself: Does this solve a real problem, or just something I like? If you’re not sure, drop it.

Killing bad ideas isn’t losing—it’s making room for the good ones.

Its also important to prototype and re iterate- so maybe if I'd perserverred with the two stage rocket; but Dad banned me from any future rocket design...

A Design Engineer's Proven System for Generating Patentable Ideas

After 30 years as a design engineer and accumulating over 100 patents working with companies like DeWalt, Black & Decker, Stanley, and ResMed, I've developed a systematic approach to invention that anyone can learn. SCAMPER is my go-to technique for product improvement and invention. It's an acronym that prompts you to think about products in seven different ways:

Real Example: When designing cordless power tools, SCAMPER led me to question battery placement (Rearrange), combine tool functions (Combine), and eliminate unnecessary weight (Eliminate). Several patents came from this single SCAMPER session.

TRIZ: The Russian Innovation System

TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) is based on analyzing millions of patents to identify patterns in how problems are solved. It includes 40 Inventive Principles that provide specific strategies for overcoming technical contradictions.
